Writing and Speaking Across the Curriculum

Starting in Fall 2025 with the launch of the Inquiry Core Curriculum, the following changes are also being made to the Writing & Speaking Across the Curriculum program:

  • Students will be required to complete at least two WAC/SPAC courses, rather than three under GenEd08. This change will apply to all students, including those who stay on GenEd08 catalog rights.
    • The permission for one WAC course to be replaced by a SPAC course remains the same.
  • WAC/SPAC courses are distinct from Core Curriculum/GenEd courses. A course cannot be both part of the Core Curriculum and have WAC/SPAC status.
    • The goal of this change is to better promote the long-standing goal of WAC to be part of a tripartite writing development scaffold, from foundational composition courses to lower-level core courses, to advanced WAC courses.
  • Programs must include at least one WAC/SPAC requirement that is within their discipline and not also the program capstone.
    • The "second" WAC/SPAC course may still be the program capstone

WAC Reapprovals

In 2023, Faculty Senate adopted a set of revised criteria for WAC courses. As a result, all courses must be recertified under the new WAC criteria to maintain their status starting Fall 2025.

In Spring 2025, the University Curriculum Committee approved an extension for reapprovals. As a result, all WAC courses, except those that have core curriculum status, will maintain their WAC status through the 2025-26 academic year.

To maintain WAC status beginning Fall 2026, courses must be approved under the revised criteria. To complete that revision process, please do the following:

  • Complete the updated Writing Across the Curriculum approval form, revising the course as required for alignment with the criteria
  • Update the WAC criteria on the syllabus (simply copy the language from pages 1-2 of the approval form)
  • Launch a Modern Campus Curriculum (formerly Curriculog) proposal to modify the course (adding/editing WAC/SPAC status), being sure to attach both the completed approval form and the updated syllabus to the proposal.
  • Also be sure to "approve" the Modern Campus Curriculum proposal after launching it

Proposals must be submitted to Modern Campus Curriculum by September 30th, 2025 and be approved by the University Curriculum Committee by their last meeting in the Fall semester to maintain their WAC status for AY26-27.

For assistance in completing the WAC approval form, please consult the page of the Core Curriculum Handbook.
