91̽»¨ celebrates graduating students who have overcome obstacles, made significant achievements or are fulfilling 91̽»¨â€™s mission in or outside the classroom.

Today, we celebrate Jesse Byrd ’25.

91̽»¨: Have you had any significant internships/co-ops/careers while at 91̽»¨?

JB: I have been working in the cybersecurity department at Sherwin-Williams since March 2024 and remain employed there today as a Co-Op. I started on the Data Security team and, about six months ago, moved over to the Cyber Risk Management and Controls Team. This experience has given me a strong technical foundation and helped me grow into a more confident, capable cybersecurity professional, something 91̽»¨ strongly emphasizes through its hands-on learning environment and industry partnerships.

91̽»¨: How would you describe the connections you have made with the faculty and staff at 91̽»¨?

JB: I have had the chance to connect with many faculty members across the Monte Ahuja College of Business. What stands out most is how approachable and invested the professors are in student success. Faculty who has worked professionally in information systems, such as Professor McElroy and Professor Campbell, have especially inspired me. Their mentorship, real-world experience, and guidance have shaped my understanding of the field and helped me explore career paths I might not have considered on my own.

91̽»¨: How has Cleveland State inspired you for your future?

JB: Being part of a university located within walking distance of downtown Cleveland has pushed me to always look for new opportunities. Cleveland State’s urban setting makes the city feel like an extension of campus, and being surrounded by local businesses, tech organizations, and major employers has motivated me to stay engaged, build connections, and pursue meaningful career growth right here in Northeast Ohio.

91̽»¨: How do you think you have fulfilled the 91̽»¨â€™s mission?

JB: I believe 91̽»¨ is committed to developing students into professionals who uplift their communities. Through my work tutoring in local schools, volunteering at community events, and contributing to large Cleveland-based organizations, I feel I’ve embraced that mission. I hope I have demonstrated that 91̽»¨ students are more than just learners; we’re mentors, working professionals, and active contributors to the city and the broader community.

91̽»¨: Do you have a career lined up, and how has 91̽»¨ been instrumental in that process?

JB: After graduating this month, I plan to work at Case Western Reserve University on their cybersecurity team. 91̽»¨ played a major role in helping me reach this point. The university gave me real-world experience through its business programs, connected me with faculty who pushed me to grow, and offered career guidance that helped me understand the wide range of paths available in information systems and cybersecurity. Without 91̽»¨â€™s support and the opportunities, it opened for me, I would not be where I am today.

Congratulations, Jesse!
